The Staatsoper Stuttgart, a classical building by the Eckensee lake, has been a hub for operatic art since 1912, surviving World War II largely intact. Designed by German architect Max Littmann, it nestles in the heart of Stuttgart, the capital and largest city of the German state of Baden-Württemberg.

The impressive building has helped to propelled Film Commission Region Stuttgart onto the shortlist for the EUFCN Locations Awards 2024 thanks to its role as the primary filming location for Cranko. The film is a biopic about dancer and choreographer John Cranko, played by Sam Riley.

Directed by German filmmaker Joachim A. Lang and produced by  Zeitsprung Pictures it intertwines Cranko’s life and art, exploring his inspirations, choreography, and relationships with dancers. Members of the  Stuttgart ballet company portray dancers of the 1960s and 70s.

Cranko studied at the Royal Ballet in London in the 1960s before finding  fame in Stuttgart by revolutionising the Stuttgart Ballet Company.

The production team utilised the opera house’s architecture and its blend of tradition and modernity, to create a timeless atmosphere. The team used its scale – the auditorium seats an audience of 1,400 people – to spotlight Cranko’s achievements.

Film Commission Region Stuttgart says the production is a perfect demonstration of why Stuttgart’s cultural importance and the position of Staatsoper as both historic treasure and vibrant artistic venue, has a great deal of potential as an international film hub.   The project has strengthened local identity while emphasising the film industry’s importance to the region.

An institution of the Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corporation (WRS), the Commission is supported by the MFG Film Fund and the State Capital of Stuttgart.
