The $30m Japan-Mongolian co-production, directed by Shinichiro Sawai (W's Tragedy), commemorates the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Mongol Empire. The film shot for four months on location in Mongolia with battle scenes featuring more than 33,000 soldiers and extras.
Set for release in Japan on March 3, the film has Asian sales handled by Avex Entertainment.
Other Shochiku sales of Genghis Khan include Central Partnership for 12 countries in the CIS, Paris Filmes for Brazil, Spentzos Film for Greece, Fivia for 13 countries in Eastern Europe, Italia Film for 15 in the Middle and Near East, Hunter TMC Film for Turkey.
The company is also selling two samurai dramas, Love and Honor - the third in the Samurai Trilogy by Yoji Yamada, starring Takuya Kimura; and Hana, by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Nobody Knows).
