The Indian Film Company-Studio 18 release Singh Is Kinng has became the biggest Bollywood opener of 2008 in India and overseas.

The success of the film, produced by Vipul Shah and directed by Anees Bazmee, follows a vast publicity and promotion campaign, while the film itself has met with mixed reviews. It was released on around 1,050 prints (including digital) in India alone.

The comedy, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, opened on August 8 and reportedly raked in $4.2m (Rs180m) across India in the first two days of release. According to Studio 18, this figure breaks the previous record set ten years ago.

The film also clocked the biggest-ever opening in North America, with $232,000, surpassing the collections of Om Shanti Om ($227,000) and Jodhaa Akbar ($209,000). It also openedly strongly in the UK with $640,000 (£337,000).

In addition, Singh Is Kinng saw a wide day-and-date release in Trinidad & Tobago, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Mauritius, Fiji, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, East Africa, West Africa, Australia and New Zealand, among other countries.

Across the 275 prints in these markets, the film is said to have made approximately $3m in its opening weekend.
