Alta Films has taken Spanish theatrical rights to Denis Villeneuve’s multi-award winning drama Incendies, which has been selected as Canada’s entrant for the foreign-language Oscar.
The film picked up the Best Canadian Feature Film award at the Vancouver International Film Festival and the City Of Toronto Award at the close of the Toronto film festival and is based on Wajdi Mouawad’s acclaimed play about a mother’s last request for her siblings to visit the Middle East and uncover their troubled roots.
Maxim Gaudette, Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin, Remy Girard and Lubna Azabal star. Luc Dery and Kim McCraw produced for micro_scope in association with TS Productions and Phi Group.
Sony Pictures Classics has already taken US distribution rights and eOne Films International closed deals in Toronto for France (Happiness), Germany (Arsenal), Benelux (Cineart), Italy (Lucky Red), Switzerland (Filmcoopi), Israel (Shani) and Middle East (ECS).
Incendies will be competing in official selection at Spain’s Valladolid Seminci film festival, which takes place October 23-30.
