Torrente 4 [pictured] and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 were the most successful movies last year in Spain.

While Torrente 4 had the best box office thanks to the more expensive price of the 3D tickets, Breaking Dawn had more spectators. Torrente 4 (Warner) cashed $25.682m and the Twilight film (Aurum) had $25.602m.

It was not a good year for cinemas but a good one for Spanish films. According to estimated figures by Rentrak, theatres lost 2.7% in box office receipts and had 2.21% fewer spectators. Total gross was $823m with 96m tickets sold, according to industry estimates.

After a disastrous 2010, Spanish cinema improved its results in 2011. Local movies sold 14.1m tickets (up from 2010’s 12.73m) and tallied $121m, more than the previous $104m. The share was 14.22%, 3% more and close to the 15% target that was hailed by the sector.

In addition to Torrente 4, hit Spanish productions (and co-productions) were Midnight in Paris on close to $10m, Brain Drain at almost $7m and Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In at almost $6m.
