Inveterate sports fan Spike Lee is hatching a new feature documentaryabout basketball legend Michael Jordan. The project should be ready intime for next year's Cannes Festival.
Lee's Jordan project is the latest in a line of high-profile auteurdriven sports docs, following on from James Toback's Tyson, about boxerMike Tysson, and Hand Of God, Emir Kusturica's film about DiegoMaradona.
Lee announced the Michael Jordan project in Cannes after apress conference to promote his new feature Miracle At St. Anna (onTF1's slate.)
Miracle At St. Anna is he story of four African-Amercian soldiers whoare members of the US army as part of the all-black 92nd 'BuffaloSoldier' Divisions that fought against the Fascists and Nazis in Italyduring the Second World War. Miracle, which Lee describes as 'basicallyan Italian film,' will be ready by the late summer and is an obviouscontender for Venice and Toronto. The US release is on October 10.
Lee was striking a relieved note about theimminent end of the George W. Bush administration.
'I hope people startto realize that this is not going to be a change for America. It isgoing to be a change for the world,' Lee commented.
'The President ofthe United States is the most powerful man in the world. People shouldrejoice around the world when that day happens in November.'
