Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group (SPWAG) has acquired all US and most international rights to Darius Films’ Defendor starring Woody Harrelson following its world premiere in Toronto last weekend.
Kat Dennings, Elias Koteas and Sandra Oh also star in the story of a man who adopts a superhero persona and plots to bring down a drug dealer whom he mistakenly believes led to the death of his mother. Peter Stebbings wrote and directed and Nicholas Tabarrok produced.
An SPWAG spokesperson declined to comment on whether Bill Pohlad and Bob Berney’s fledgling distributor Apparition would eventually handle the US theatrical release under the companies’ distribution alliance.
Jeff Sackman brokered the deal for Darius Films, with Tim Brown on behalf of sales company Joker Films, and Cinetic Media . SPWAG’s Adrian Alperovich and Michael Helfand negotiated for the company.
“Making this film was a great experience,” Tabarrok said. “Peter did an incredible job and the cast performances are outstanding. In addition, we are ecstatic to be able to work with the Sony team in insuring the best possible distribution for Defendor.”
