Russian war epic Stalingrad had the biggest ever opening for a non-US, non-local film over the weekend in China, grossing $8.3m over four days (Oct 31-Nov 3).
Sony Pictures Releasing International has international rights to the film including China, where it was released on more than 7,000 screens. It was also released on more than 100 IMAX 3D screens.
Directed by Fedor Bondarchuk and produced by Alexander Rodnyansky, the $30m film depicts the battle of Stalingrad when German forces surrendered to the Red Army. It was been selected by Russia as its entry for the best foreign-language film category of the Academy Awards.
The 3D war film also added $2.6m at the Russian box office over the weekend for a cumulative gross of $47.7m. Its worldwide gross including Ukraine now stands at more than $55m.
