Signs grossed $13.6m in a record-breaking weekend for Buena Vista International (BVI) that produced the distributor's biggest live-action opening of all time in Italy. The supernatural drama took $4.1m from 414 screens and was also the fifth highest industry opening ever for a US-produced picture in the territory. In France the picture ranked number one with $3.3m from 699 screens, roughly comparable to the opening of Pearl Harbor.
In Russia Signs grossed $1m from 110 screens, the biggest ever opening for BVI and more than three times the opening box office for director M Night Shyamalan's previous picture, Unbreakable. An $800,000 haul from 47 screens in Belgium was the biggest non-holiday opening ever for BVI in that territory. In Japan in its sixth week it dropped 40% and took $943,000 from 304 screens for a $24.2m running total while $785,000 in its sixth weekend in the UK yielded a $24.3m cumulative score. Signs now has an international cumulative score of $138.5m.
Lilo & Stitch grossed $3.2m over the weekend for an $85.6m international cumulative total running total, securing second place in its third week in the UK with $2.7m for a $10.1m running total.
Snow Dogs opened in Germany, taking $1m from 342 screens. The comedy scored $1.5m in all territories over the weekend for a $21.5m international total.
