Christie Digital projectors used in the series at four outdoor locations.
In April and May, German live-marketing agency, Checkinevent GmbH, in cooperation with moviescreens and German radio station 1Live, converted four German outdoor locations into drive in cinemas. The 1Live Autokino event was staged at the Schalke arena, the Münster/Osnabrück airport, the Borussia-Park in Mönchengladbach, the stadium in Dortmund and finally at the Essen/Mülheim airport. Films shown included The Fast & The Furious Five, Kill the Boss and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The four-day events featured a different genre on each day, with action on Thursday, horror on Friday, comedy on Saturday, and “something cosy”.
Christie Digital provided 2K DLP Cinema projectors from the Christie Solaria Series, built into a container trailer designed for mobile events, which also included a Doremi server. Sound was carried to the cars via standard drive-in FM transmission equipment. moviescreens provided a 23 meter x 15 meter inflatable screen which provided an image size of 20 x 10 metres. Alexander Thye, Managing Director of moviescreens, who were responsible for the technical implementation of the events, said: “All in all, we needed around five hours to rig up and fit everything required and once everything was up and running, everything went smoothly for the rest of the whole stay. The events started at around 20:30h and depending upon location, sometimes we were able to start even earlier. This was where we especially benefited from the strong light output of the Christie projector.”
The Autokino events have proved so successful, that the runway of the Essen/Mülheim airport will continue to be used for drive in screenings until October 2012.
