The streaming giant has taken another potential theatrical release off the table, acquiring world rights to the Ricky Gervais satire.
Netflix plans a 2016 launch for Special Correspondents however it is understood there are no plans to distribute it in theatres.
Gervais, who collaborates with Netflix on the comedy series Derek, wrote and directs Special Correspondents and stars alongside Eric Bana. Bron Studios and Unanimous Entertainment produce.
”Special Correspondents is classic Ricky Gervais; smart social satire with heart,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “It’s the kind of great grown-up comedy that studios rarely make anymore, one that’s perfect for Netflix members around the world.”
The story follows a reporter who fabricates warzone dispatches from a Spanish restaurant in New York.
The Special Correspondents deal marks the latest incursion by Netflix into Hollywood following previously announced deals on Beasts Of No Nation and Jadotville, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 and separate four-film pacts with Adam Sandler the Duplass brothers.
