Consumers can rent films, including The Dark Knight, for $3 using Facebook ‘credits.’
Warner Bros. Digital Distribution (WBDD) today announced that it will offer films for purchase or rental through Warner Bros Entertainment’s Facebook page. The major is the first US studio to offer the service.
The offering is only available to US consumers at present, with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight the first title available from the film’s official Facebook page.
The studio has created a “rent” icon on the film’s page where users who ‘liked’ the film can apply their Facebook credits. Each film is to cost 30 Facebook credits or $3 per rental.
An increasing number of titles will be made available in the coming months.
Users will have full control over the film while watching it through their Facebook account for up to 48 hours from purchase.
“Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people,” said Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros Digital Distribution. “Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.”
