The Institute said the new venture was designed “to support artists and creators developing projects that explore the convergence of film and new media technologies.”

The labs will take place at the Sundance Resort in Utah from Oct 23-28 and will feature bespoke story sessions, discussions on artistic, design and technology issues and case studies.

“Over the past few years, new forms of storytelling have emerged and already proven the potential to engage audiences in creative and innovative ways,” director of the Sundance Institute Feature Film Programme Michelle Satter, who oversees the labs, said.

“We created the New Frontier Story Lab to support visionary artists developing projects that will change the way we experience stories in the future. We are thrilled to include such an exciting group of projects in our inaugural Lab.”

Creative Advisors for the New Frontier Story Lab include Susan Bonds (42 Entertainment), Nick Fortugno (Playmatics), Aaron Koblin (Google Data Arts Team), Richard LaGravenese (Oscar nominated writer of The Fisher King) and Lance Weiler (Pandemic, The WorkBook Project).

The participants and their projects are:

18 Days In Egypt, co-creators Jigar Mehta and Yasmin Elayat (Egypt-US);

Follow Back, wr-dir Brigitte Dale and prdr Robbie Wilkins (US); 

Kill Shakespeare, co-creators Anthony Del Col & Conor McCreery (Canada); 

The Last Hijack, co-dirs Tommy Pallotta and Femke Wolting (Netherlands);

Question Bridge: Black Males, co-dirs Chris Johnson and Hank Willis Thomas (US); and

Rome, dir Chris Milk (US).
