The SXSW festival has announced the features in its Midnighters section and revealed its complete line-up of shorts.
The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival, which runs March 9-17 in Austin, Texas, has announced the features in its Midnighters section and revealed its complete line-up of short films.
Features getting their world premieres in the Midnighters section include Steven C Miller’s The Aggression Scale, Ciaran Foy’s Irish/Scottish co-production Citadel, Joko Anwar’s Indonesian project Modus Anomal, Paco Plaza’s [REC] 3 Genesis from Spain and Pascal Laugier’s The Tall Man [pictured].
Timo Vuorensola’s Iron Sky, from Finland, Germany and Australia, gets its North American premiere in the section, which will also includes a ‘Super Secret Screening.’
SXSW’s shorts line-up comprises 135 titles that will screen in 12 sections. The films were selected from 3,306 submissions, a 7% increase on last year.
“Though our regular program already includes a healthy sampling of genre fare, the Midnighters section highlights those that go a bit crazier, gorier and all-around balls out-ier,” said SXSW senior programmer and operations manager Jarod Neece. “This year’s program includes both veteran names with anticipated follow-ups and fresh discoveries with new voices, and charts otherworldly, insane territories that breathe new life into horror conventions.”
“The shorts selected this year truly maximize the form’s potential. They employ clear directorial vision and draw the audience in with original characters, revealing the constant struggle to define identity,” said shorts programmer Claudette Godfrey.
