Pedro Almodovar's Talk To Her has surpassed C$1m ($708,000) in its 19th weekat the Quebec box office, making it one of the top grossing foreign languagefilms of all time in Canada's predominantly French-language province.
The highest grossing film in alanguage other than English or French, Roberto Benigni's Life Is Beautiful(La Vie Est Belle), earned C$3.5m in the province on release in 1998.
Talk To Her, which won Almodovar the Academy Award for Best OriginalScreenplay, was released by Montreal-based Seville Pictures on December 25,2002 on ten screens in three versions (English sub-titled, French sub-titledand French dubbed). It's currently playing on seven screens across theprovince.
In a statement, Seville co-presidentDavid Reckziegel said he expects the film's Quebec earnings to represent 10% ofthe film's North American box office and 60% of its Canadian take.
In English Canada, where MongrelMedia holds theatrical rights through its sub-distribution pact with SonyPictures Classics, the film has earned just over C$600,000 ($425,000) in thesame period.
Seville is also enjoyingfavourable runs from the still more specialized Russian Ark, Aleksandr Sokurov's single-shot sensation that premieredlast year at Cannes, as well as French hit Etre Et Avoir.
Seville is distributing both filmsin English- and French-Canada. The company expects them to exceed $500,000 and$300,000 at the box office respectively, representing a 2000% return oninvestment. "And we continue to hold the rights for another 15 years," saidSeville executive Pierre Brousseau.
