Festival top brass have unveiled the entire slate after they announced on Wednesday the World Cinema, Breakthrough, Midnight, Shorts and Cinema’s Legacy programmes set to screen from November 5-12.
World Cinema and Breakthrough selections are eligible for audience awards. Shorts selections are eligible for the grand jury prize that qualifies the winner for Academy Award consideration.
The 29 World Cinema selections include Pablo Trapero’s The Clan (pictured), László Nemes’ Son Of Saul, Marco Bellocchi’s Blood Of My Blood, Pablo Larraín’s The Club, Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan, Naomi Kawase’s Sweet Bean, Michel Franco’s Chronic, Radu Jude’s Romanian Western Aferim!, Ciro Guerra’s Embrace Of The Serpent, Ida Panahandeh’s Nahid, Gabriel Mascaro’s Neon Bull and Rams by Grímur Hákonarson.
The three Midnight selections are Can Evrenol’s Baskin, Akiz’s Der Nachtmahr and Roxanne Benjamin’s Southbound.
The five Breakthrough selections are Kim Dong-myung’s The Liar, Celia Rowlson-Hall’s Ma, Guto Parente’s The Mysterious Death Of Pérola, Sibs Shongwe-La Mer’s Necktie Youth and Morgan Knibbe’s Those Who Feel The Fire Burning.
Overall the AFI FEST programme features 127 films – 74 features, 53 shorts – from 45 countries. The roster encompasses 18 films from 39 AFI Conservatory alumni including The 33 writer Michael Thomas, 45 Years editor Jonathan Alberts, Anomalisa director-producer Duke Johnson and cinematographer Joe Passarelli.
As previously announced By The Sea and The Big Short will bookend the festival and the centrepiece galas are Where To Invade Next, The 33 and Concussion.
For the 12th consecutive year, Audi is the presenting sponsor. Additional top sponsors include AT&T, the festival’s official airline American Airlines and Vizio, the official home theatre sponsor of AFI.
The festival’s venue sponsors include TCL Chinese Theatres, Dolby Theatre, the Hollywood & Highland Center, The Hollywood Roosevelt and the Egyptian Theatre. The official media sponsor is Time Out LA.
