UK media reports have tipped Christine Langan, the producer of The Queen, to be the new head of BBC Films, in a newly created position of 'editor'.
However, BBC sources refuse to confirm the appointment. 'There will be new positions but I can't confirm what they are,' a BBC spokesperson said of the structural shake-up expected following the departure of the present head of BBC Films, David Thompson, in four weeks' time.
The BBC's head of fiction Jane Tranter, who oversees drama commissioning, comedy commissioning, programme acquisitions and BBC Films, is understood to be talking to a number of candidates. One of these, the spokesperson confirmed, was Christine Langan, 'but [Tranter]hasn't made any final decision yet.'
Langan, who joined BBC Films as a producer/executive producer in the autumn of 2006, would appear to be ideally positioned for a key creative role at a restructured BBC Films.
'Jane [Tranter] will get the right people for the job,' said the spokesperson. 'It won't be about their convenience of position. It will be about whether they are right for where [Tranter] wants to take BBC Films.'
An announcement about restructuring and new appointments at the broadcaster's film arm is expected within the next two weeks.
