In a second major pre-buy announced in Toronto that is understood to have closed on Friday in the mid-to-high $20m range, Lionsgate has acquired worldwide rights for its Summit Entertainment label to the action-thriller.
Jack Reynor, James Franco, Zoe Kravitz and Dennis Quaid will star in Kin. Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps will serve as producers alongside Jeff Arkuss, David Gross and Jesse Shapira, who will also finance the film through No Trace Camping.
Jonathan and Josh Baker will co-direct the feature, based on their short film Bag Man that premiered at SXSW 2015.
The story follows a recently released ex-con and his adopted younger brother as they flee a vengeful criminal, the FBI and a cadre of otherworldly soldiers.
The brothers’ only chance of survival comes when they get their hands on an ancient weapon of mysterious origins.
Principal photography is scheduled to begin on October 24. WME Global assembled the package and handled the sale with Good Universe.
Earlier this week Focus Features paid what was understood to be around $35m for worldwide rights to PT Anderson’s upcoming Daniel Day-Lewis reunion project set in the world of high fashion in 1950s London.
