Momentum Pictures, Alliance Atlantis' UK distribution-production arm, has acquired all UK rights to Danis Tanovic's Cannes competition film, No Man's Land.
In a separate move Momentum announced that it had acquired all UK rights to The Business Of Strangers, a drama about corporate power games that is sold by Beyond Films and appeared At Sundance in dramatic competition earlier this year. Marking the directorial debut of Patrick Stettner, Strangers stars Stockard Channing and Julia Stiles.
In addition to sales previously announced, No Man's Land's sales agent, UK-based The Sales Co, has signed deals with AB Svensk for Scandinavia, Good Times for Iceland and Lumiere for Brazil.
"No Man's Land was being hotly pursued by a number of distributors in Cannes," said Sally Caplan, Momentum's senior vice-president of acquisitions and business affairs. "I'm extremely pleased that Momentum Pictures has been given this opportunity to bring the film the respect and recognition it deserves from a UK audience."
Caplan negotiated the deal with Jane Wright, acting chief executive of The Sales Co. Along with a North American sale to UA after a bidding war, the $1m-plus debut also went to Japan (Bitters End); Spain (Golem); Israel (Shani); Switzerland (FilmCoopi); Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile (Alfa); Hungary (Budapest Film); Greece (Ama Films); Turkey (Umut Sanat); Korea (Korean Arts Centre); CIS (Cosmopol); Hong Kong (First Distribution); and Baltic States (Fimimax).
The film follows two soldiers, a Bosnian and a Serb, caught behind enemy lines during the 1993 Bosnian conflict. As the two try to negotiate their way out of their predicament, with the farcical intervention of the UN peacekeeping force, the story catches the attention of the world's press.
The Strangers deal was negotiated by Caplan for Momentum and Gary Hamilton and Richard Guardian, respectively general manager and vice president of international sales for Beyond.
