The forthcoming Venice Film Festival will celebrate its 80th anniversary* with a new Venezia Classici (Venice Classics) section.

American director Michael Cimino will attend the screening of the Criterion restored version of his 1980 film Heaven’s Gate [pictured]. The film was presented in Venice in 1982 in its original premiere length.

*It is the festival’s 80th anniversary but 69th edition.

Venice noted that presenting restored classics would become a regular feature at future editiosn as well, replacing the traditional retrospectives.

The Classics section will also include documentaries about filmmakers and films.
