The Viennale has unveiled some highlights from its 2010 programme (the festival runs Oct 21-Nov 3).
Festival director Hans Hurch held a briefing on Friday in Vienna, to introduce the selections so far.
The festival will present about 130 feature films in its main programme, which is non-competitive.
The festival is also hosting a retrospective devoted to the work of Eric Rohmer (curated with the Austrian Film Museum), tributes to Larry Cohen and William Lubtchansky, and special programmes devoted to Canadian filmmaker Denis Cote and Austrian avant-garde filmmaker Siegfried A. Fruhauf.
Hurch said: “Ideally, the Viennale strives to convey, like any other exciting, successful, and essential film festival, a possible image of cinema: alternately precise, accentuated, playful, risk-taking, subjective, and radical. This includes errors and peculiarities, but never cynicism, randomness or calculation. And that in turns means luxury and responsibility at the same time.”
