Warner Bros already distribute El Deseo's films in Spain.
'Since we are particularly close to Simona Benzakein [Warner Bros' vice president of European productions] and Richard Fox [Warner Bros' executive vice president international], we've decided to broaden our relationship with Warner and develop and co-produce some projects together,' El Deseo's Barbara Peiro told ScreenDaily.com. 'This is the case for El Patio De Mi Carcel by Belen Macias.'
The $4m (3m Euros) drama about a group of prison friends who attempt to adjust to life in the outside world will be produced by El Deseo's Agustin Almodovar and Esther Garcia alongside WB's Benzakein. Macias' first feature, starring Candela Pena (Princesses), Veronica Echegui (My Name Is Juani) and Ana Wagener (Darkbluealmostblack), will shoot for eight weeks in Madrid and at a jail in Guadalajara.
Warner Bros will distribute the film theatrically and on DVD in Spain. Pathe International is handling international sales.
'Right now, we don't have any other projects with Warner, since everything will be negotiated on a film-by-film basis,' adds Peiro.
The deal signals Warner Bros International's continuing intention to support Spanish production talent. The studio is already distributing Barcelona based company Mediapro's films, including Tom Fernandez's debut feature La Torre De Suso, which featured in the Zabaltegi new directors section of the San Sebastian film festival last month. Mediapro is also backing future projects by Spanish directors Fernando Leon and Isabel Coixet.
