How To Train Your Dragon
Paramount Pictures International are distributing DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon, which became the highest new entry in Screen’s international top 40 this week, after debuting in nine territories. The family adventure placed fourth, after generating $8.9m from 905 screens, for a decent average of $9,800 a screen. The lion’s share of the tally came from a first place debut in Russia, where the film took $7.3m from 818 screens, through Central Partnership. The 3D animation follows a young aspiring dragon hunter, who suddenly befriends one of the creatures. How To Train Your Dragon expands to around 30 additional markets over the coming weekends, including Spain on March 26 and the UK on March 31.
Heartbreaker
Hotly-anticipated French production Heartbreaker (L’Arnacoeur) placed ninth internationally, opening top in its home market for Universal Pictures International, as well as decent debuts in Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland. Overall, the comedy grossed $7.2m from 399 screens, recording a very strong screen average of $18,000. Pascal Chaumeil directs the film, which stars Romain Duris and Vanessa Paradis, and follows a break-up artist, hired to seduce women out of unsavoury relationships.
Pretty Cure All Stars DX 2
Toei’s animated sequel, Pretty Cure All Stars DX 2, generated $2.5m from 159 screens, after opening in its home territory, Japan. The film enjoyed a very healthy screen average of $15,400. The first instalment in the franchise concluded its theatrical run with a cumulative gross of $18.1m.
Pistol Bandit Band
South Korean caper Pistol Bandit Band also debuted on 321 screens locally, taking, including previews, $1.9m. Lotte Entertainment is distributing the film, which follows three grandmothers who, after having their savings stolen, decide to rob a bank.
