Wild Bunch comes to Berlin this year boasting new projects from both seasoned and fresh talent - and has a few special events up its sleeve.
In casting news, Kate Hudson, Elias Koteas, Bill Pullman and Ned Beatty have joined the previously announced The Killer Inside Me, a $13m adaptation of a novel by Jim Thompson which Michael Winterbottom is directing. The actors join Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba. Wild Bunch has worldwide sales on the noir psychological thriller outside the US which Endeavor is handling.
Reteaming with Palme d'Or winner Cristian Mungiu, Wild Bunch will handle Tales From The Golden Age, an unconventional personal history of the late communist period in Romania told in six independent, yet sometimes connected, stories by native directors. Mungiu will direct two of the stories himself; he is also producing the film which will be ready for Cannes.
Gaspar Noe will be on hand to show and discuss a promo reel of his highly-anticipated Enter The Void. The film, which Noe shot in Japan, is about a brother and sister who promise to never leave each other but who are faced with the inevitable when the brother is shot. As he dies, he sees his life in flashback as he attempts to protect his sister by understanding why he was killed.
Even The Rain from director Iciar Bollain stars Belen Ruda and Luis Tosar in a Euros 9m production of a script by Ken Loach's go-to writer Paul Laverty. The story follows an obsessive director who, on his quest to tell the true story of Christopher Columbus, ultimately ends up shooting in Bolivia during the Bolivian Water War. The film is produced by Morena Films with whom Wild Bunch worked on Steven Soderbergh's Che.
Morena Films is also involved in Room In Rome, a remake of Matias Bize's 2005 film En La Cama, which was Chile's Oscar entry. Directed by Julio Medem and starring Elena Anaya and Natasha Yarovenko, the film explores the relationship of two women who spend 12 hours falling in love in a Rome hotel room.
Also joining lineup is The Time That Remains, a Euros 6mn father and son story about Palestine, from Divine Intervention director Elia Suleiman. The film will be ready for Cannes.
Wild Bunch is also unveiling The Blonde With Bare Breasts. Manuel Pradal's film stars Vahina Giocante and Nicolas Duvauchelle, in what begins as a painting heist and ends as a love story/road movie set on a Paris canal barge. A promo reel will be available.
Ordinary People is a first feature from buzzed-about Cinefondation alumna Vladimir Perisic. The film, about disillusioned Serbian soldiers, will be ready for Cannes.
Sound Of Noise comes from filmmakers Ola Simonsson and Johannes Stjarne Nilsson whose short, Music For One Apartment And Six Drummers, competed in Cannes in 2001. In the film, a group of sonic terrorists - able to make music using anything they come across - mount a full-scale musical assault in the name of anarchy and freedom. The detective assigned to investigate these attacks has a torturous allergy to music - made worse when he unwittingly falls in love with the band's leader.
A promo reel will be available for Sound Of Noise with the musicians on hand to demonstrate their unique brand of music-making.
Internet fanboys are already rejoicing at Goemon, a martial-arts fantasy that Wild Bunch has added to its slate. The film, from Casshern director Kazuaki Kiriya, will be ready for Cannes and is set to be released on 350 prints in Japan in early May.
Finally, among Wild Bunch's screenings will be the world premiere of Marziyeh Meshkini and Mohsen Makhmalbaf's The Man Who Came With The Snow.
