Nicholas Pratt has been named the winner of a short 3D film competition run by Nintendo and the BFI.
The competition, titled a Vision in 3D, invited filmmakers from throughout the UK to submit shorts focused around the theme of ‘British Summer 2012’, shot only using the Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo 3DS XL.
Pratt, a 20 year-old student of Japanese at London’s SOAS, will now be mentored by AV innovator Stuart Warren-Hill and director Asif Kapadia.
He will also shoot a new short film on location in London, in collaboration with Warren-Hill and a professional crew, which will be screened before the Nintendo Gala UK premiere of The Sapphires on Oct 15.
Director of photography Malcolm Hadley (Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie) will also contribute to stop-motion aspects of the short.
Pratt said: “I’m really excited to have this opportunity to get involved in the film industry. It will be incredible to watch the film on the big screen with an audience and walk the red carpet.”
The three runners-up in the competition are Tom Rule, Jamie Mitchell and Charlie Doran. All four films will be available to view on Nintendo 3DS XL pods at the BFI Southbank from early October. They will also be made available to watch on Nintendo 3DS XL consoles from Oct 31-Nov 21.
The competition is part of a wider partnership between Nintendo and the BFI, which are working on new 3D projects.
