Allen described the story as 'romantic but serious' in quotes published by Spanish press this week following a meeting in New York between the director and Barcelona 's mayor, Jordi Hereu. A script has been completed and Allen is currently auditioning English-speaking actors. In addition to Johansson, he also mentioned actress Rebecca Hall (The Prestige), a Screen International Star of Tomorrow, as a potential co-star.
Prized Spanish cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe has been tapped for the film as part of a reportedly all-Spanish crew. Among Aguirresarobe's recent credits are Milos Forman's Goya's Ghosts, Alejandro Amenabar's The Sea Inside (Mar Adentro) and The Others, and Pedro Almodovar's Talk To Her (Hable Con Ella).
The film will shoot in Barcelona as well as Oviedo, a city in Spain 's northern Asturias region where Allen was the recipient of the prestigious Prince of Asturias award in 2002. The director looks set to be in Barcelona as of June.
