India’s Yash Raj Films has announced that it will produce Shekhar Kapur’s long-gestating passion project Paani.

Yash Raj Films’ Aditya Chopra will produce the film which is expected to shoot in India and overseas from mid-2013. A.R. Rahman is composing the music.

“I have been preparing for this film for a long time, but always wanted an Indian partner that has the same passion for the film as I do and in Adi I have finally found that,” said Kapur.

“It’s a huge production that demands futuristic sets and large action pieces. With Yash Raj Films, I have found a perfect home for Paani.”

The film is based in the future when water is controlled by international corporations who use thirst as a weapon of control.

At Cannes 2010, Kapur announced that Swarovski Entertainment, the newly-launched film arm of the luxury crystal brand, had boarded the project, which at that point was budgeted at $30m.
