Screen can exclusively reveal the first trailer for Haider Rashid’s Europa, which is set to world premiere at Cannes in Directors’ Fortnight (July 7-17).
Paris-based MPM Premium is handling world sales on the Iraq-Italy-Kuwait co-production, in which a young Iraqi man a chased through the wilderness by “migrant hunters”.
It marks the third feature by Iraqi-Italian filmmaker Rashid after Tangled Up In Blue and It’s About To Train.
Rashid wrote the script with Sonia Giannetto and produces under his Radical Plans banner, in association with Kuwait’s Beyond Dreams and Italy’s Fair Play.
UK-Libyan actor Adam Ali stars in the film as Kamal, a young man who has fled Iraq for Europe. At the border of Turkey and Bulgaria, local mercenaries are ruthlessly hunting down migrants. Alone in the forest, Kamal has three days to escape.
The cast also includes Svetlana Yantcheva, Pietro Ciciriello, Gassid Mohammed, Mohamed Zouaoui and Erfan Rashid.
The film, spoken in English, Arabic and Bulgarian, is supported by the Iraqi Ministry of Culture’s Baghdad Film Fund, Italian Ministry of Culture, Toscana Film Commission and Arab Fund for Arts and Culture.
