South Korean sales agent Finecut is launching international sales of Brave Citizen (working title) ahead of the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM).
The action comedy is based on Korean webtoon (internet comic) Brave Citizen, which Finecut reports ranked first in popularity when it was serialised on the webtoon and web novel platform Comico. It was also serialised on the larger Naver Webtoon platform and recorded 2.27 million views on the Line Webtoon platform in Taiwan.
Directed by Park Jin-pyo (Voice Of a Murderer, You Are My Sunshine), the film adaptation follows a former champion who has been expelled from boxing and is now a substitute high school teacher who is moved to put on a mask and use her skills in defence of justice after witnessing violence.
It stars veteran actress Shin Hye-sun (Collectors) in the lead role. She is joined by rising star Lee Jun-young (Netflix’s Love And Leashes and DP), also known as Jun from K-pop boy group U-KISS.
Also attached to the feature are musician Dalpalan (The Wailing) for the film’s soundtrack, editor Kim Woo-hyun (Emergency Declaration) and martial arts coordinator Heo Myeong-hoeng (Extreme Job).
Produced by StudioN, (Netflix’s Sweet Home) and VOL Media (Josée), the film is presented by Korean OTT platform Content Wavve, also known as wavve. It is in post-production and being lined up for theatrical release in 2023.
Finecut will also be selling a raft of films that are screening at Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). Debuting feature director Lee Sol-hui’s thriller Greenhouse in the Vision section; director Hong Sangsoo’s two recent films Walk Up and The Novelist’s Film in the Icons section; Cannes Critics’ Week closing film Next Sohee; and mystery thriller The Anchor in the Korean Cinema Today – Panorama section.
