Nordic filmmakers and actors including Joachim Trier, Lone Scherfig, Thomas Vinterberg, Trine Dyrholm and Jonas Poher Rasmussen have signed an open letter expressing their support for the Iranian protestors following the death of Jina Mahsa Amini while in police custody.
“With this letter we want to amplify their voices and send a message to the Iranian people that we hear them, we see them and they are not alone,” the letter said.
“We invite everyone who believes in freedom and equality to stand in solidarity with the brave women in Iran by using your voice for those who are fighting for theirs.”
Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, was arrested for not wearing her hijab correctly and reportedly tortured by police leading up to her death on September 16.
Her death has since sparked mass anti-government protests across the country.
Other signatories to the letter included Eskil Vogt, Hlynur Palmason, Iram Haq, Isabella Eklof, Juho Kousmanen, Selma Vilhunen, Tarik Saleh, Tuva Novotny and Iranian-born director Ali Abbasi, who now resides in Denmark.
Abbasi’s new film Holy Spider is set in Iran and is centred around a real-life serial killer who murdered female sex workers to “cleanse” the city of its immorality. It was recently selected as Denmark’s entry for best international feature at the Oscars.
Abbasi also signed an open letter from Iranian filmmakers on Monday (September 26) calling on filmmakers around the world.
