The Irishman

Capping a fine week that has positioned it as arguably the Oscar front-runner on the eve of Golden Globe nominations, Netflix’s The Irishman earned 14 nods for the 25th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards unveiled on Sunday (8).

Martin Scorsese’s mob drama was named best film by the National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Circle last week and is in contention for best film, best actor for Robert De Niro, best supporting actor for Joe Pesci and Al Pacino, best director for Scorsese, best editing by Thelma Schoonmaker, best adapted screenplay for Steven Zaillian, best production design for Bob Shaw and Regina Graves, and best cinematography for Rodrigo Prieto, among other categories.

Antonio Banderas is also in contention for the best actor prize for his role in Pain And Glory, as are Joaquin Phoenix for Joker and Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems. Lead female nominees include Renée Zellweger for Judy, Scarlett Johansson for Marriage Story, Charlize Theron for Bombshell, and Awkwafina for The Farwell.

Scorsese competes in a very strong director category that includes Noah Baumbach for Marriage Story, Greta Gerwig for Little Women, Bong Joon ho for Parasite, Sam Mendes for 1917, Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie for Uncut Gems, and Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood.

Parasite earned seven nods and will vie for the best foreign language film with Atlantics, Les Misérables, Pain And Glory, and Portrait Of A Lady On Fire.

Sony’s Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood emerged with 12 nominations, including, followed by Sony’s Greta Gerwig’s Little Women on nine, Universal’s 1917 and Netflix’s Marriage Story on eight apiece, and Fox Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit, Warner Bros’ Joker, and Neon’s Parasite on seven each.

Laura Dern is in the running for her work on HBO’s Big Little Lies and Marriage Story, while Scarlett Johansson is recognised for Jojo Rabbit and Marriage Story. Newcomer Asante Blackk earned two nods for his roles in This Is Us and When They See Us.

Netflix earned 61 nominations for its series and films, HBO 33, Amazon 14, and NBC 12.

The awards ceremony will take place on January 12, 2020. The Critics Choice Association represents more than 400 television, radio and online critics in North America. It was organised this year with the formal merger of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association.
