The Irishman

Netflix trio The Irishman, Marriage Story and The Two Popes and Sony’s Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood are among 344 features eligible for the best picture Oscar, the Academy announced on Tuesday (17).

To be eligible for 92nd Academy Awards consideration, feature films must open in a commercial film theatre in Los Angeles County by December 31, 2019, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days.

Under Academy rules, a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.

Feature films that receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release are not eligible for Academy Awards in any category. The Irishman, Marriage Story and other Netflix titles like The Two Popes, as well as Amazon Studios contenders like The Report and The Aeronauts, have all received qualifying theatrical debuts prior to their platform launch.

Other eligible titles include Neon’s Parasite, A24’s Uncut Gems and The Lighthouse, Sony’s A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, and SPC’s Pain And Glory.
